Cultural maps put Maori housing ahead
Associate Housing Minister Peeni Henare says he is seeing a real community and whānau focus in the way Māori plan housing developments.
Mr Henare was in Taitokerau this week with Housing Minister Megan Woods to look at papakainga including a Ngāti Hau development in Whangārei.
He says papakianga aren’t just going on multiply-owned Māori land but on general land owned by iwi and hapū.
They are also being planned at scale, with 60 to 80 homes in some developments.
"What I really enjoy about the way Māori do their planning for their houses or their village is they actually culturally map the area to make sure what they want to see in their community. They want to see a kura kaupapa, they want to see a kōhanga reo and all those things that will give their whānau and their tamariki the opportunity to do really well," Mr Henare says.
He says Māori are starting to revolutionise housing design in Aotearoa.
