Peters pitching for Maori voice

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says his party has a record of delivery for Māori that no other party can match.

Mr Peters returned to the public stage yesterday with a speech to the party’s annual conference in Auckland.

New Zealand First would be a phoenix arising from the ashes of last year’s election incineration, once voters were reminded what they had lost.

He says Māori have lost a voice.

"You know what Māori want. They want decent and safe and hygienic house that they can afford. They want a decent health system for their mother or their baby or themselves need access. They want a decent education system they can climb on and the last thing they want is first world wages so which party stood for that rather than all this other rogue stuff and every other project that may sound kind but for the mass of ordinary Māori in their daily grind in struggle street, they need a voice, and that's what we are saying we are, because we have always been that voice," he says.

Mr Peters attacked the trend for government agencies and initiative to go by Māori names, even if they had little to do with Māori.

OPINION: Unpacking race based politics
Everyone knows that the politics of race can, has, and will impact on the mood and sentiment of voters heading to the polls.
OPINION: Judith, talk to us not about us
