Wall speaks up for Uyghur tino rangatiratanga
Labour MP Louisa Wall says Māori should be concerned about what is happening to China’s indigenous Uighur minority.
Ms Wallis standing by claims China is enslaving Uighurs and harvesting organs from political prisoners, saying they’re based on the findings of the 2019 independent tribunal led by distinguished UK international human rights lawyer Sir Geoffrey Nice QC.
She says it’s hard to make definitive statements about what is happening in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, which is why she’s "joining calls for China to allow a designated human rights body to inspect the so-called education camps.
"Our indigenous bothers and sisters are the most vulnerable still within a global context and we would have huge empathy for speaking out and supporting their rights to their own language, their own culture, their own call for tino rangatiratanga," Ms Wall says.
She says Labour went to the 2020 general election with a policy to address issues of modern slavery.
