Spokesperson Huhana Lyndon says it's named after their tupuna Te Kamo, who held mana over the area.
She and kaumatua Dick Shepherd have won the support of Whangārei Mayor Sheryl Mai for the change, and they're trying to build up wider community support, starting with pronunciation lessons in local schools and kura.
"An we're asking people right now to say Kamo but bringing the name forward Te Kamo to remember the tupuna and his pā site Te Raupunga. We're asking whanau who would resist it to come forward and raise those concerns because that is all part of the maturing of our community," she says.
