Know your place, university told
The University of Auckland is being told it needs to strengthen its relationship with mana whenua as the first step towards indigenising the institution.
Associate Professor Te Kawehau Hoskins, the university's new pro vice-chancellor Māori, specialises in the implementation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in educational governance, policy and practice.
She says recognising the University's place in Tāmaki Makaurau is part of embedding Māori ways of thinking and conducting research.
"Where does this place stand, this University of Auckland. What are its people. What are the social and geographical histories of this place. What are people's relationships to those histories and I think that's a safe place to start indigenising the university because everybody should know that, everybody should know where they are and what their connections are to that place and the people of that place," she says.
Dr Hoskins replaces Dame Professor Cindy Kiro, who is now ahorangi chief executive of the Royal Society Te Apārangi.
