A Local Government New Zealand board member says the reform will give Māori a chance to influence how their communities, society and land is managed for the next 100 years.

Bonita Bingham from South Taranaki says the Three Waters review of drinking, waste and stormwater, the replacement of the Resource Management Act and the just-announced reviews of council structures represent a major change,

She says reform is well overdue, with the amount councils can raise from rates outstripped by the demands placed on them by the central government.

"Things like building consent work, dog control and the waters, all these things made legislatively by central government and then handed across to local government to operationalise and to roll out in our communities but the funding doesn't come across with the laws to do that," Ms Bingham says.

She says Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta has made it clear she is determined to address inequities for Māori within the sector.

Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: The desperation driving Judith Collins in her attempt to bring back to life the ghost of Don Brash's Orewa Speech by consistently referring to co-governance as 'Separatism' and 'Segregation' is not only ugly and disingenuous, it flies in the face of National's own history of co-governance with Māori.
