Two in one asthma treatment gets global acclaim
A New Zealand-developed approach to managing asthma is being picked up internationally.
Asthma and Respiratory Foundation medical director James Fingleton says the latest guidelines from GINA, the Global Initiative for Asthma, recommend 2 in 1 reliever therapy, in which patients receive both a preventer and reliever treatment at the same time.
The foundation adopted the approach last year based on three large randomised trials, and Dr Fingleton says it’s considered the biggest paradigm advance in the management of asthma for decades.
New Zealand’s asthma statistics remain among the worst in the world, with one in seven children and one in eight adults living with asthma, and Māori tamariki, mokopuna and whānau disproportionately affected.
To mark the first New Zealand Asthma Awareness Day today, Dr Fingleton will take part in a live Facebook Q&A session on the foundation’s page from 1.30pm.
