Conservative unhappy with prisons
Conservative Party justice spokesperson Garth McVicar has slammed prisons as breeding grounds for young offenders.
The Sensible Sentencing Trust founder has attacked Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell’s call for a review of institutional racism in the justice system in light of the increasing over-representation of Maori in youth crime statistics.
Mr McVicar says pandering to Maori offenders was the reason young Maori were offending.
He says if Mr Flavell is serious about wanting to reduce the number of young Maori criminals he would do well to visit prisons and see how they have become breeding grounds for young offenders.
