Iwi to work closer with local government
Local Government New Zealand has formed a relationship with the Iwi chairs forum signing a Memorandum of Understanding to support and encourage strong relationships and collaboration between councils and Iwi.
It builds on the local relationships various councils have with Iwi and Hapu and in particular the relationships the regional sector have developed with the Freshwater Iwi Leaders Group.
The signing of the MoU occurred during the Iwi Chairs Forum meeting, held in Hopuhopu, Ngaruawahia yesterday attended by representatives of LGNZ’s National Council and Iwi leaders from across the country along with local regional and district council representatives.
The memorandum establishes a structural and operational relationship between LGNZ and the ICF and outlines how they will work together to build and maintain a strong and mutually beneficial relationship.
It identifies important common interests and supports and encourages strong and constructive relationships between councils and Iwi/Maori to achieve statutory obligations and address local and regional issues.
