Maori Migration told in short form
The story of the Maori migration across the Pacific is being retold in a new short book this week.
The First Migration by Atholl Anderson is a BWB Text drawn from his chapters in the award-winning Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History, published by Bridget Williams Books in 2014.
Professor Anderson shows how Maori oral traditions of the waka their ancestors came in have been illuminated by radiocarbon dating, genetic analysis, paleoanthropology and other scientific techniques.
He also discusses how oral tradition and whakapapa can offer reliable accounts of the past, where a focus on place and person builds a historical narrative that can be passed on from generation to generation.
