The hidden history of 20 years of Maori involvement in New Zealand’s internet domain name system has now been told.

In a new online publication, Karaitiana Taiuru, a founder of the Maori Internet Society, says Maori achievements are largely missing from books and articles documenting the history of the Internet in New Zealand.

These include the ability to use iwi.nz and maori.nz as well as macrons in domain names.

However the battle continues on simple rights such as recognition that Maori is an official language of New Zealand, tribal names being used by non iwi groups and the ability for anyone to register offensive and racist names.

While there have been assertions maori.nz was the world’s first indigenous domain name, that honour in fact goes to some Native American sovereign states

The publication is at http://www.taiuru.maori.nz
