Netball key to healthy lifestyle
Tamaki Makaurau is getting ready to host more than 500 players for the annual Aotearoa Maori Netball Easter tournament, which is being held this year at Netball Manurewa.
Denise Ewe, the Auckland president of the Maori Women’s Welfare League, says Aotearoa Maori Netball came out of league initiatives in the 1980s to promote healthy lifestyles.
It has since become a major force in New Zealand netball, with many age group representatives and Silver Ferns making their start in the system.
She says the lifestyle kaupapa set by past presidents Dame Georgina Kirby and Dame June Mariu remains at its heart.
"We can see that whole change in terms of our young players. They are beautiful, they are fit, fast, trim, and we still promote the healthy lifestyles so our tournaments are auahi kore, alcohol and drug free, violence free, and this year it is going to be fizz free," Ms Ewe says.
