Iwi and hapu wanting to build kaumatua housing will be able to share the lessons learned by the builders of two retirement villages in Hamilton.

The kaumatua housing toolkit was launched yesterday at the Shift Aotearoa conference, which is hearing about research done for the Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities National Science Challenge.

Rangimahora Reddy  from Rauawaawa Kaumatua Charitable Trust says because of the interest in what the trust and Te Rūnanga o Kirikiriroa have done in their two developments, they asked Waikato University researchers to interview all the parties concerned and develop the toolkit.

One of the biggest lessons was about the relationships that were needed to transfer a plan to a finished build, from getting affordable land to getting the design right, including ensuring kaumatua have a say in the design.

"If kaumatiua are going to be living there it is going to be best for them if they help inform what the facilities might look like, what it will feel like, how it is going to run for them. The more user voices you have in a particular kaupapa, the more likely it is going to be successful," Ms Reddy says.

The first village was a partnership with Housing New Zealand, but now Te Rūnanga o Kirikiriroa has registered as a social hlousing provider it can manage its own projects.
