Ku Klux kaumatua not putting up with Gallagher comments
Rahui Pokeka kaumatua says concern for the children of Waikato Tainui drove him to turn up at the Gallagher Group headquarter dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes.
Timi Maipi says he was enraged at company chair Sir William Gallagher telling a Hamilton business audience that the Treaty of Waitangi was a fraud, citing a fringe and discredited theory that the real text was so-called Littlewood Treaty found in a Pukekohe house.
Sir William hid in his office until Mr Maipi was removed by opolice.
He says as the chair of Huntly’s Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga, he felt the electric fence mogul needed a lesson that there was no place for his colonialist views.
"Our children are being taught to relate to the things they own around them – the environment, the river, to be outstanding leaders – and to listen to that kind of behaviour form a kaumatua like Sir William, I said 'here is a kaumatua who is not going to put up with that bullshit," Mr Maipi says.
If Sir William repeats his redneck rant he will be back at the office.
