Teachers celebrate return to curriculum
Primary teachers union NZEI Te Riu Roa is taking the lead to show how curricula can be used as a basis for assessment and reporting to parents now that National Standards are off the table.
It’s holding a forum in Wellington on Friday to celebrate and relaunch the early childhood, English and Maori curricula.
President Lynda Stuart says putting the broad, rich curricula back at the centre of children's education is a huge positive step.
Speakers include Dr Mere Berryman from the University of Waikato, one of the developers of Te Kotahitanga system for disrupting the conventions that perpetuate educational disparities for Maori students, curriculum developer Lester Flockton who has worked extensively on ways to assess Maori students and University of Otago emeritus professor Helen May, who helped develop Te Whariki curriculum guidelines.
