Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the relationship between the Labour Party and Ratana is a living commitment rather than a moment in history.

Ms Ardern led her MPs on to Ratana Pa today, acknowledging especially Te Tai Hauauru MP Adrian Rurawhe and Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene, who have significant roles in the church.

Quoting some of the prophesies of founder Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana, she says the agreement in 1936 between Ratana and Labour leader Michael Joseph Savage was a continuing call for action.

"I'll tell you it's my belief we will never have fulfilled our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi ore the prophesies of Ratana until we make sure Maori are no longer over-represented in our unemployment statistics, that they are no longer over-represented in our prison population, that they no longer have tamariki living in poverty, and that our rangatahi, particularly those who live in the regions, have every opportunity for a decent job and a decent future," Ms Ardern says.

ODT Cartoon outrage misplaced
We should collectively be righteously appalled at the tone deaf ODT cartoon that made light of the terrible measles epidemic that has killed over 50 children in Samoa. It was an ugly 'joke' that shouted white privilege, but calls to boycott the ODT, sack the cartoonist and the enormous social media wave of fury seem to me to be grotesquely misplaced.
