Nurses are being called on to play a greater role in reducing the incidence of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, obsesity and heart disease here and in the Pacific.

New Zealand Nurses Organisation kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku says the call came from the 19th South Pacific Nurses Forum held in Rarotonga last week.

Nurses are well placed to provide adequate health promotion, early detection and management of such conditions.

She says there was an acceptance each community must find what works in its own culture and drive the initiative.

"This was the first time you actually saw indigenous cultures taking back ownership and looking at not just the disease, the NCD, the diabetes, the obesity, but looking at it from a concept of well being, how do we teach our kids when they err really early, how do we role model them to eat better or make better choices," Ms Nuku says.

Why is the Politics of Kindness failing our poorest children?
The 2019 child poverty monitor report makes for grim reading...
ODT Cartoon outrage misplaced
We should collectively be righteously appalled at the tone deaf ODT cartoon that made light of the terrible measles epidemic that has killed over 50 children in Samoa. It was an ugly 'joke' that shouted white privilege, but calls to boycott the ODT, sack the cartoonist and the enormous social media wave of fury seem to me to be grotesquely misplaced.
A Collins' Guide to Cultural Colour Blindness
Dr Rawiri Taonui: Utilising ‘white’ as a metaphor for ‘a person or woman of colour’ conveys connotations of white superiority.
