One of the founders of whanau ora says some providers are still struggling with the idea of putting whānau at the centre of the process.

Dame Tariana Turia says whanau ora has to be about whānau taking back control of their lives.

What she’s hearing at this week’s biennial Whānau Ora Conference in Tāmaki Makaurau is people are starting to understand that, backed up with high quality research on what has been achieved.

But there are still some who think in terms of provider or business as usual where the provider maintains control.

"And we’ve got to get over ourselves and start to step back and enable whānau to be in control of their own destiny and that's hard. It's really hard when you think you can see everything that's wrong and you think the family can't, so it's an important change of attitude from all of us to begin to trust whānau to know what's best for themselves," Dame Tariana says.

Dr Rawiri Taonui; This column investigates how the proposed Fletcher Residential development at Ihumātao, the National government’s Special Housing Area policy and the preoccupation of the Auckland Council, the courts and statutory bodies on preserving Māori culture as an icon of the past rather than restoring the living relationship between Māori and their whenua constitutes a second confiscation
TVNZ Journalist blames Māori, not Oranga Tamariki.
OPINION - Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: TVNZ Journalist Jehan Casinader, has written a remarkably shallow evaluation of the corrosive Orange Tamariki child uplift programme and has bewilderingly concluded the problem is Māori, not the policy.
