OraTaiao: The NZ Climate and Health Council is backing today’s student strike against climate change as a rational response to the most serious threat to human health in the 21st century.

Co-convenor Alex Macmillan says the young people will face the burden of extreme weather events and costs from a planet that is warming due to uncontrolled greenhouse gas emissions.

While the Secondary Principals' Association refused to support the marches and advised that absent students should be marked as truant, many principals and teachers have embraced the kaupapa.

That’s the responsible approach.

"This is not only their right to stand up for their healthy future but also a real opportunity for their learnng around citizenship and democracy and when ordinary means to trying to infuence change have failed, extraordinary action is needed," Dr Macmillan says.
