Te Teko blueberry farm largest in Aotearoa – owned by Maori for Maori
It’s just over a week since the official launch of the Miro-Meihana Koata Blueberry Farm at Te Teko, the largest blueberry orchard in Aotearoa – owned by Maori for Maori.
The launch also tied in the announcement and confirmation of a funding injection by the Provincial Growth Fund.
The funding announcement – all 2.1 Million worth – will enable the project to get to the final stages and, in the process, will employ around 150 kaimaihi from Te Teko, Ruatoki, Taneatua, Kawerau, and surrounding communities.
Our CEO LIZ Te Amo captures the inspiring kaupapa that is Miro – and the incredible journey ahead for our Maoripowered company, kaimahi, and our local communities.
OUR STORY KO MĀTOU ĒNEI
Miro is a collective of Māori food producers. We combine ancient traditions and values handed down by our ancestors, with modern technology and science, to produce great tasting, premium produce for the world. We’re passionate about growing on Māori-owned land and creating work and career opportunities in horticulture for our people.
Our owners are a collaboration of Māori businesses, trusts, whānau, hapū, iwi, so we are underpinned by kaupapa Māori values and approach to business. We partner for global success and strive to employ and train Māori, especially rangatahi (youth), throughout Miro – starting with our berry orchards. Ultimately there will be opportunities in post-harvest operations, logistics, export, science, technology, marketing, and business administration and management.
Lifting the productivity on Māori-owned land and creating sustainable returns to shareholders is central to Miro’s vision.
Being market-led is central to building a global business. We are starting with blueberries because of their proven high nutritional value as a superfood, and increasing popularity worldwide. We’ll also grow other premium produce – from New Zealand’s pristine environment, to nourish communities the world over.
