First encounter drives tv winner
Award wining television producer Bailey Mackey says telling one of the biggest stories in the country was challenging but rewarding.
His Pango Productions won Best Live Event Coverage in the 2020 New Zealand Television Awards for Television One’s Sesquicentennial special Aotearoa 250.
He says going back to his home town Gisborne to tell the story of Captain James Cook’s arrival and what happened after was always going to be confronting, as his tipuna Te Maro was killed in that first encounter.
"We really wanted to portray that story, the hurt and mamae, as well as presenting hope and a plan for the future so three hours with John Campbell, Stacey Morrison, Matai Smith, all incredible professionals and we have interviews with the Prime Minister, the Governor General, local people, Dame Ann Salmond, so I'm really proud because there were so many moving parts in the production," Mackey says.
Other Māori winners included Scottie Douglas Productions for Māori Television’s Off the Grid with Pio in the lifestyle category, Scottie Douglas again for best te reo Māori programme with Waka Huia, and Great Southern Television for NZ Wars – Stories of Waitara which won the Te Māngai Paho Best Māori Programme.
