Kapiti iwi help identify barriers to fish passage
Greater Wellington Regional Council working with Kapiti Coast iwi have identified more than 600 barriers to the passage of fish through freshwater streams in the area.
Seven rangatahi worked alongside project manager Penny Fairbrother to identify barriers such as culverts and pipes on public and private land.
Ms Fairbrother says information collected will help prioritise future work to remove or fix the barriers and help native fish to migrate.
About 70 per cent of native fish are at risk of extinction.
She says conducting the research on a catchment scale was important because waterways are all interconnected and rivers and streams make up entire systems for fish migration.
