Whānau and hapū in the north with an interest in strengthening their reo are urged to get in applications for funding or the money will go elsewhere.

Poia Rewi from Māori language promotion body Te Mātāwai says its latest round closes on August 2, so applicants need to register on the website and put in their proposals.

Te Mātāwai will no longer hold money over, so any pūtea not spent in a cluster will be put back into the central pool and redistributed.

He says the focus should be on inter-generational transmission and bringing the language back into the home.

"Innovation comes in varying forms and it doesn't need to be anything unseen. It's just activities our whānau know works with them. What works and what is accessible seems to be the cry we hear from our people," he says.

Professor Rewi says heart warming examples of projects funded in the past include a coffee morning where young mums come together to talk in te reo, and a school which arranges calls trips where only Māori is spoken in the van.
