Tears are being shed for kuia Vapi Kupenga, whose tangihanga is on now at Hiruharama Marae on the East Coast.

The long time Waatea broadcaster died on Tuesday in Wellington.

Artist Selwyn Muru says the former teacher, actor and community organiser’s genius was her ability to see the positive in people.

She also appreciated heart-felt emotion.

"She loved talking about the kuia who could really tangi, real tears. She says there are great pretenders sometimes, you hear them howling. But the real nga kuia tino mohio ki te tangi, ka heke nga roimata i te waa e tangi ana," Murupaenga says.

The funeral service for Vapi Kupenga will be tomorrow at Hiruharama.

OPINION: Minister Nanaia Mahuta charts brave new chapter for NZ Foreign Affairs
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: Nanaia Mahuta's move from Māori Development Minister to Foreign Affairs was initially perceived as an acknowledgment of the rising political muscle of urban Māori that Willie Jackson's appointment represents, but Nanaia has found a style that transforms NZs Foreign Affairs and leads with real mana that is increasingly looking urgently needed.
