Maori-themed poki game upsets

Maori public health organisation Hapai Te Hauora has condemned an online slot game that uses Maori cultural icons including waka, stylised bone carvings, pounamu, and the haka Ka Mate.

The website was created by software company Endorphina Ltd based in the Czech Republic.

It claims the game celebrates the cultural heritage of Maori.

Hapai says it is disgusted by the unauthorised use of Maori cultural icons for profit by a foreign company with no links to our indigenous people.

The association with gaming is an insult to Maori who suffer disproportionate harm from problem gambling in New Zealand.

Public health expert Dr Meihana Durie says Endorphina Ltd's misuse of Maori culture is not only a breach of New Zealand laws but is likely to breach similar laws in other jurisdictions.

He says Endorphina should withdraw the product and issue an apology to all Maori and especially to Ngati Toa Rangatira and Ngai Tahu, the iwi whose special relationship with Ka Mate and pounamu respectively are protected by law.

TVNZ Journalist blames Māori, not Oranga Tamariki.
OPINION - Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: TVNZ Journalist Jehan Casinader, has written a remarkably shallow evaluation of the corrosive Orange Tamariki child uplift programme and has bewilderingly concluded the problem is Māori, not the policy.
Ihumātao Te Riri Pākehā | The White Manís Anger
Dr Rawiri Taonui; This column is part one of three on Ihumātao. This part traces the historical injustices behind Ihumātao. Part two outlines the legal progress and rising opposition against the Fletchers Residential development, the contradiction between justice for Māori and preserving Māori as an artefact, and how the Crown has divided mana whenua. Part three examines the political implications of Ihumātao.
Dear Tracey Martin. I'm sorry Minister but your Oranga Tamariki response is disgracefully tone deaf
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: The Minister responsible for Oranga Tamariki has finally responded over the weekend to the outrage within Māoridom at the Oranga Tamariki uplifts and her response is disgracefully tone deaf.
