Te Pou o Mangataawhiri has booked a spot in next year’s Te Matatini national kapa haka competition in Wellington, winning the regional final at Claudelands arena in Hamilton on Saturday for the first time.

They will be joined by four other Waikato teams: Moitai Tangata Rau, Te Iti Kahurangi, new group Ngaa Pou o Taniwharau and Nga Pua o Te Kowhara.

The Waitaha regional were also held at the weekend in Christchurch, with Nga Manu a Tane taking the top berth, followed by Te Poutumaro and Te Ahikaaroa.
